3DSUG / March 3, 2009 According to Lisa Dodge, program development manager for Gardner Publications, the Cincinnati-based publisher that is the organizer of the Time Compression Expo and publisher of Time Compression magazine, "The response to our inaugural event shows that even in these trying economic times people recognize that the ability to accelerate product development is vital to market success.  The eighteen exhibitors that have purchased the floor space are all firms that can help companies significantly decrease their time to market." Travis Egan, publisher of Time Compression magazine, observes, "We're finding that even though companies are cutting back on expenditures, they are still interested in finding the ways and means to improve their processes so that they can grow their bottom lines.  Rapid prototyping and other faster-to-market technologies are proving to be of vital importance to companies in all industries, ranging from consumer goods to industrial equipment."

KDL Precision / September 1, 2009 The custom injection molding of Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) uses much of the same process and equipment as does injection molding. In both processes, the mold is heated and closed before the uncured rubber is injected. Unlike high consistency rubber (HCR), also known as gum stock, liquid Silicone is just that, a "high viscosity liquid" that comes in two parts, Part A and Part B.

3DSUG / August 25, 2009 Our industry is undergoing one of the most exciting times as more customers adopt and accept our technologies after learning and understanding their unique values and the advantages. Stereolithography and Laser Sintering have been identified as the most matured additive manufacturing process with a clear potential to transition into direct digital manufacturing. The number of applications and case studies that we see every year at the 3DSUG conference provides a way to trace the evolution and development of these two technologies.

SiMT / August 15, 2009 The 3D/VR Center at SiMT is one of only six Interactive Digital Centers in the world. Specializing in the design, development and implementation of 3D/Virtual Reality business solutions for sales, marketing, prototyping and manufacturing, the center works with business and industry to develop immersive and interactive user experiences. The 3D/VR Center can create virtual prototypes, allowing engineers and industrial designers to evaluate new products prior to building a 3D model. Clients can design in CAD, review prototypes (virtually) and then order rapid prototype models (SLA and SLS) to test form, fit and function. Virtual Reality is the next generation product development solution for companies looking for advanced technologies and processes as they speed new products to market.

SiMT / August 4, 2009 In part two of our "Designing for Manufacturability" newsletter, we asked a few industrial designers what was the number one thing to take into consideration when designing a new product. We hope you enjoy the variety of perspectives on Designing for Manufacturability. If you have any questions or information you would like to contribute, please let me know.

SiMT / July 9, 2009 When we think about "rapid prototyping" the term "speed to market" most often comes to mind. But there are others aspects of rapid prototyping that are sometimes overlooked, and the coming issues of our newsletter will combine a variety of perspectives on designing for manufacturability with the latest examples of additive manufacturing. If you have any questions or information you would like to contribute, please let me know.

Met-L-Flo / July 7, 2009 Met-L-Flo received Best of Tradeshow Award at NPE this year. Met-L-Flo / June 6, 2009 Direct digital manufacturing (rapid manufacturing) has the unique capability of being able to produce virtually any shape of component, no matter how complex. Each year, SME recognizes industry leaders who participate in the 2009 DDM Competition.

3DSUG / July 2, 2009 3DSUG would like to thank you for visiting our booth at the NPE expo. We appreciate your interest and hope to meet with you again in the future! 3DSUG is an organization for users of Stereolithography (SLA) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) equipment. If you own or operate any of these technologies, please visit our website or contact us for more information about SLA and SLS training and future networking opportunities.

3DSUG / May 29, 2009 The uniqueness of the 3DSUG conference is the level of networking that occurs at the event among the most qualified users of SLA and SLS technologies. The ability to interact at a personal level with users and discuss best practices creates an environment that allows for true innovation to occur inside our industry. This year ahead we are planning to increase the number of technical presentations categorized in different industry tracks. We are also preparing new hands-on workshops and training sessions.

3DSUG / April 17, 2009 On behalf of the 2010 Executive Board, I express my sincere appreciation to our 2009 3DSUG conference attendees, vendors, and sponsors for a successful conference in Daytona Beach, Florida. As our economy faces one of the most challenging times networking and collaborating with each other is more important today than ever before. We had a great turn out this year showing that our technologies continue to evolve finding new applications and meeting unique demands from customers. Over 140 certificates were awarded to us users for successfully completing multiple training sessions showing the appreciation of the group for the technical value of this conference. The support and positive spirit of the group this year reassured the future longevity of our technologies and us as a group. I officially invite all 3DSUG users to next year's conference at the Hilton Buffalo Thunder for the very first time in Santa Fe, New Mexico, April 25-29. Watch for conference updates coming soon, and thanks in advance for your support in 2010.

SiMT / April 15, 2009 Thermal expansion, moisture expansion, continued curing and creep are a few of the challenges associated with measuring RP parts. In a recent comparison the following materials reported growth of a 10" part over a 10 degree F temperature change...And, when it comes to inspecting RP parts, there are many instruments to choose from. Take care when handling instruments. Keep your instruments cleaned and have your instruments calibrated annually. Remember you are only as accurate as you are consistent.

SiMT / March 5, 2009 When Sonoco contacted SiMT's Rapid Prototyping center, they were looking for ways to improve their manufacturing processes and control costs. Sonoco is a global supplier of plastic packaging products, many of which are injection molded. The Challenge: Thoroughly reviewing product design from a PC monitor or two-dimensional drawing can be difficult at best. When designs require changes after molds have been made, unnecessary tooling expenses are incurred. Additionally, manufacturers risk lost production time when molds require modifications. The Solution: Sonoco used prototypes to evaluate and approve the design of the Flow-Rite™. This process enhancement afforded the company a complete design review of the product prior to modifying production tooling. The plunger, a Flow-Rite™ component, features a unique patent-pending shape and textured design that displaces unwanted air and protects ultraviolet inks.

The eighteen exhibitors that have purchased the floor space are all firms that can help companies significantly decrease their time to market."
