A Word from the Chair
Dear Nadra,
The conference is less than three months away! At this point if you haven't already done so, I encourage you to request permission from your management and/or customers to participate in this years technical competition. This competition allows you to showcase your ingenuity and hard work by sharing your completed projects that involve finishing and/or functionality to your colleagues. In addition to the prestigious award provided it also gives your company tremendous visibility on your rapid prototyping and manufacturing capabilities. At this year's conference, the winner of each category will receive, in addition to the award, complimentary attendance to RAPID 2008 Conference & Exposition organized by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) to be held at the Disney's Coronado Springs in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
If you have experienced difficulties in gluing the different stereolithography materials, I strongly urge you to attend the technical breakout session organized by the Loctite Industrial Division of Henkel Corporation and Materialise. This session deals with the different types of adhesives; benefits and limitations of cyanoacylates, two-part acrylics, epoxies and urethanes; joint design; part fixturing and so much more dealing with cutting and gluing parts.
As the agenda continues to evolve it is never too late to send your comments in areas of interest. Click here to review the New Agenda!
Space is sometimes limited so I encourage you register early and when you do be sure to sign-up for these training sessions. Again, all of the details are available when you Register Online.

Are your duplicated parts not showing up on the platform?
By Bob Zubrickie |
|
Sometimes there are challenges associated with new technologies. If you are a user, you probably know what I'm talking about. Have you experienced the following scenarios after running "duplicated parts" using 5.5.1 build station software on the Viper:
- Parts not building,
- Supports building but not all of the parts or
- Parts and support files skipped during the build.
Fortunately, the 3DSUG is a great forum for discussing these and other technical issues. Here is what I found to cause the absence of duplicated parts and support files:
- Stopping in the middle of a simulation build to exit out.
- Launching a build immediately after a stopped simulation.
Solution: Successful Builds on the Viper
Here is a general practice procedure to prevent missing parts and support files:
- Load your job and make your duplicates
- Run your simulation build
- Exit the build station software
- Restart the build station software
- Select your job
- Select view command
- Start build

| Getting Noticed
When it comes to logo placement, location is key! By Bob Zubrickie |
|
My wife and I just returned from a Bahamas cruise. While visiting the Port of Nassau we took a taxi ride to Atlantis to check out the night-life. As we sat on the entrance park bench awaiting our taxi, a well dressed man approached me and said, "Sir I noticed your yellow t-shirt. What is 3D SUG"? I was shocked!! To think that anyone would even notice, well enough in another country, the 3D SUG logo amazed me even more. I explained the technology and the purpose of our Users group. He seemed very impressed.
When I asked why he replied, "I noticed the Huntsman logo at the top of your t-shirt." I promptly informed him that Huntsman is a diamond sponsor the Users Group. Then the man proceeded to say, "I know Mr. Huntsman personally, he is a very generous man, in fact I am on my way to have dinner with him." He then got in his limo and drove away.
Awestruck by what had just happened I thought, "here I am far away from home and out of the United States and someone notices a logo on the back of my yellow t-shirt? It was definitely an affirmation of just how important it is to get your logo on the 3D SUG t-shirt. The closer a logo is located to the top of a t-shirt, the more it is noticed. The more a sponsor donates the closer to the top the logo will be located, and as I discovered in the Bahamas, it's definitely worth every penny! | |
