Dear 3DSUG User,
This will be my last newsletter as 3DSUG Chairperson. I really appreciate everyone's support and look forward to helping new Officers grow our group. That being said, it's time for new users to volunteer to lead our organization into the future. I will present on my thoughts on our future at the Business Team meeting on Tuesday March 17, but that is also the time to vote for new Officers. Please email if you are interested! Rotating positions every year include Vice-Chairpersons, Site-Coordinator, and Secretary. You have a chance to steer the industry forward in a challenging but rewarding opportunity! Also for those late registering users, we have extended the price increase deadline to March 7, 2009. For $495, there is tremendous value in attending the 3DSUG Conference. Check out the latest agenda!Brian Bauman, DSM Somos & 2009 3DSUG Chairperson

Well this is it, the final newsletter prior to the 2009 Annual Conference and Exposition. As we all know the tight economic conditions are calling for some drastic measures and belt tightening with personal finances, business finances, as well as the finances for the 3DSUG. Our Treasurer, Guy Bourdeau is squeezing every penny so tight that if you look at a penny with a magnify glass you will see tears in Lincoln's eye. Guy's responsibility is to make sure that monies are not being spent needlessly, and that we are getting the biggest return on the dollar. With that being said, we have to give the Hotel a final tally for each food function. Once we give the final numbers this week, we will not be able to lower our counts. I am telling you this so you attend every food function, since your meals have been paid for. If you do not attend the lunches or the Awards Banquet the money spent on your food and entertainment is lost; it is just like throwing money in the garbage. An example is each lunch costs $38 per plate. If we guarantee 200 plates, and only 175 people show for the lunch than we just wasted $950. That is a lot of money to be throwing away, so please make sure you attend each function. The past few days I took some free time to reflect on this years (and previous years) Users group and what it means to me. I have been attending the 3DSUG since 1990 (when we use to meet twice a year), and was amazed on how tight of a community the 3DSUG Group is. This group is packed with Users who have a strong passion for the technology, the willingness to help educate others about the technology and the personality to welcome everyone into our organization. I have been part of many Organizations and User Groups and have never come across anything like the 3DSUG. Our group is not cliquish, and we welcome everyone with open arms, making the new attendee, as well as the seasoned veteran as part of our extend family. It has been said time and time again that the only difference between the 3DSUG Annual Conference and an annual family reunion, are the educational presentations. This, in my opinion is as great Kudo to all, for continuing this close knit Users Group. I have been serving on the Executive Board for 15 years and I am not only proud to be a Board Member, but I am proud to be a 3DSUG Member at Large. Even with these tough economic conditions we are able to continue to have our Annual Conference, gain continued support for the Vendor Fair, and have consistent financial support from our sponsors. This speaks in volumes, how important the Conference is and the positive impact this Conference has on the technology. I truly would like to thank each and every one of you for helping make the previous years, as well as this year's annual Conference a huge success. Secretary Position Opens for 2010 3DSUG |
It has been my pleasure to serve a total of four years for you in this specialized field of prototyping. (One year as the secretary.) It is time to allow the opportunity for someone else to help out. If you appreciate what this Users group does for you and you would like to give back the secretary position is one of the easiest to do. Even if you are thinking about getting in at the Vice Chairperson level. The Secretary position will give you the insight of the tasks involved with putting on the 3DSUG conference for the users. I served as Vice Chairperson, Chairperson, Past Chairperson and now presently secretary. You do not have to have any experience being a secretary to fill this position. The present officers will let you know what has to be done and when it needs to be done. You just follow a standard timeline of what and when things need to be done. I will also assist you with getting you up to speed and you can always count on me at anytime for consultation. Serving on this board is very rewarding. Please consider either the secretary position or a Vice Chairperson position this year. We need your help. You do not have to attend the 2009 3DSUG conference to run for any of these positions. Just contact Tom Sorovetz, Guy Bourdeau, Brian Bauman or myself at anytime and we can nominate you as a candidate.
Thank you and please consider giving back.

Companies Still Looking for Ways to Improve Processes and Grow Their Bottom Lines |
The debut Time Compression Expo--which is being held June 22 to 26 at McCormick Place in Chicago, co-located with NPE 2009: The International Plastics Showcase and the MoldMaking Expo--has sold out its 3,000-square feet of floor space.
According to Lisa Dodge, program development manager for Gardner Publications, the Cincinnati-based publisher that is the organizer of the Time Compression Expo and publisher of Time Compression magazine, "The response to our inaugural event shows that even in these trying economic times people recognize that the ability to accelerate product development is vital to market success. The eighteen exhibitors that have purchased the floor space are all firms that can help companies significantly decrease their time to market." In response to the demand, Dodge says, an additional 1,200-square feet of floor space is being added to the Time Compression Expo in the West Building of McCormick Place. Travis Egan, publisher of Time Compression magazine, observes, "We're finding that even though companies are cutting back on expenditures, they are still interested in finding the ways and means to improve their processes so that they can grow their bottom lines. Rapid prototyping and other faster-to-market technologies are proving to be of vital importance to companies in all industries, ranging from consumer goods to industrial equipment." According to attendee statistics from NPE 2006:
- 5,951 were interested in rapid prototyping equipment
- 6,254 were interested in rapid tooling
- 3,024 were interested in prototyping services
Although NPE is held every three years, Dodge says that the Time Compression Expo will be an annual event. One of the advantages for companies exhibiting at the 2009 event is that they obtain priority status for booth space selection for the 2010 expo. To register for NPE2009, Time Compression Expo, and other activities including technical tracks and plant tours, go to: www.timecompressionexpo.com/attend/register.html. To learn about exhibiting at the Time Compression Expo, contact Lisa Dodge at ldodge@gardnerweb.com or 734/709-3822. *The eighteen organizations that have booked space are: 3D Systems, Armstrong Mold, Axis Prototypes, DSM Somos, Dimension 3D Printing, EOS North America, Exact Metrology, GPI Prototypes & Manufacturing Services, Hexagon Metrology, Met-L-Flo, Metalise It. . . .America, Objet Geometries, PTI Engineered Plastics, Stratasys, The Ex One Company, Seaway Plastics Engineering, Xcentric Mold & Engineering, and 3DSUG. |
