The Science of Measurement

Thermal expansion, moisture expansion, continued curing and creep are a few of the challenges associated with measuring RP parts. In a recent comparison the following materials reported growth of a 10" part over a 10 degree F temperature change:

  • 0.012000 (Polypropylene)
  • 0.001310 (Aluminum 6061)
  • 0.003380 (Accura 55)
  • 0.003550 (Accura 10)
  • 0.003900 (Poly-Carbonate)
  • 0.004000 (ABS)
  • 0.004000 (Accura 45HC)
  • 0.004050 (Accura 50)
  • 0.004830 (Accura 40)
  • 0.005000 (Delrin)
  • 0.005000 (SLS GF)
  • 0.005605 (Accura 60)
  • 0.005900 (SLS PA)
  • 0.005940 (Accura 25)
  • 0.000550 (Steel 4140)

Accuracy of Instrumentation
When it comes to inspecting RP parts, there are many instruments to choose from. Take care when handling instruments. Keep your instruments cleaned and have your instruments calibrated annually. Remember you are only as accurate as you are consistent.

Measurement Instruments

Portable Measurement Services
The FARO Laser ScanArm V3 scans 19,200 points per second with an accuracy of + .0014" (35 microns). The Platinum FaroArm, a seven axis portable CMM offers an accuracy of + .0012" (30 microns).

Portable Measurement Services
Right to Left: Jonathan Wilke (SiMT), Vince Anewenter and Sheku Kamara (MSOE) provided hands-on training to attendees at 3DS Users Group.

Quality Control & Inspection
The Challenge: Fixed CMMs have limitations.

Solution: SiMT's portable Platinum FaroArm is literally an extension of any QA program. You can quickly verify fixtures and parts are within tolerance to make substantial quality improvements to your products and programs.

Reverse Engineering
The Challenge: Eliminate time spent gathering measurements.

Solution: The FARO Laser ScanArm® V3 rapidly scans parts on your site and with accuracy. The instrument is ideal for rapid prototyping, reverse engineering and 3D modeling. SiMT technicians can hard-probe measure simple point variations or laser scan sections for larger volumes of data, eliminating if not reducing altogether time spend gathering measurements and data.
