3DSUG Selects Venue for Annual Conference
3DSUG Chairmanb

It's not really a secret any more. The 3DSUG has selected Daytona Beach for the 21st Annual 3DS Users Group Conference, taking place March 15-19, 2009.  Tom Sorovetz once again used his experience and tough negotiating skills to get us great room rates and accommodations.

As always, the 3DSUG will host a Vendor Fair where attendees can meet with manufacturers, suppliers and rapid prototyping service bureaus to increase their growing network of 3DSUG peers. This year's Vendor Fair is scheduled for the evenings of March 15 and 16 in one of the Hilton Daytona Beach Coquina ballroom. The four-day conference will feature technical presentations, and hands-on training sessions including some with certificates after completion.  Soon I will be looking for papers and presenters so let me know if you can participate.

If you attended the conference last April, I hope you'll continue to participate again this year at either an attendee, sponsor or vendor level. If you haven't been able to attend in recent years, I hope you'll be able to join us in unveiling the industry's most advanced and innovative uses of SLA, SLS and 3D Printing systems available today!

Question and Answers
Charles Norton of NCP Leasing
In an interview with 3DSUG, NCP Leasing President Charles Norton discusses different leasing options for your equipment.

Q: What are the different types of leases?
A: Leases fall into two broad categories that have significantly different tax and accounting implications:
  • Financing Leases
  • Operating Leases
Q: What's included in a lease?
A: The equipment. Leasing is usually 100% financing, with the leasing company paying the entire purchase price of the asset and leasing it to the lessee, usually with no down payment.

Q: What's typically not included in a lease?
A:
A lease is 'triple net' meaning it excludes maintenance, insurance and taxes.  It also excludes things like:
  • freight
  • installation
  • site preparation
  • materials
  • training
Q: How do warranties apply to leased equipment?
A: It is no different than if you purchased the equipment because the lessor assigns the warranty to the lessee. The lessor disclaims and assigns its warranties and other rights against the manufacturer or vendor to the lessee. In addition, the lessee waives its right to assert any claims or defenses against the lessor for any problems, because the lessee chose the equipment.

Q: What else should I consider before leasing equipment?
A: A lease is a relationship, and like any relationship it can be pretty good or not so good. The terms and conditions and the fine print are important for things such as how the transaction ends which is usually via written "Notice". You should also pay close attention to various fees, and as a general rule a lessee should not agree to any form of 'right of 1st refusal' for follow-on transactions.

Daytona Beach: Save the Date

Tom Sorovetz

Well it is official.  The 2009 3DSUG takes place March 15-19, 2009 at the Hilton Daytona Beach (the same site of the 2007 Conference).  The Hilton is honoring our $125 room rate and is giving us free wireless internet in the public spaces as well as free internet in your hotel room.  This might not be a big deal for some, but for others it equates to over $20 per day in savings.  As we learned in 2007, the weather is between 60 degrees and 75 degrees during the day and around 50 degrees at night so pack accordingly since the Tuesday Night Awards Banquet is usually an inside and outside venue.

Bob Dzugan and I are working on the annual Saturday Golf outing and we are hoping to secure the LPGA Course once again.  I will also be working with Graham, Kevin, Steve and others to set up another fishing excursion. Maybe this time they will catch some fish like they did this past year.  will keep everyone informed of both outings.

When making airline reservations you can fly into Daytona Beach Airport (DAB) or you may choose to fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO).  I am in the process of negotiating a deal with a local transportation company for transportation to and from both airports.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
  • When: March 15-19, 2009
  • What: 2009 3DSUG Users Group Conference
Hope everyone is having a great summer!

Conference Registration Made Easy!
Guy E. BourdeauAnother conference has come and gone with success. Twenty years and still it has been a learning experience for all of us -- including good changes and improvements to your Executive Board!

As many of you know, one change we made was implementing a new online registration system. This system has proven successful in simplifying conference registration. It's been a real asset, but the process has been a learning one, and as such I've requested an upgrade option. I'm currently negotiating the extension to our service contract and will keep you posted.

Secure Transactions
Cvent manages the online registration service we are using. The system has excellent security measures for storing personal information and ensuring all credit card transactions are secure. When registering, please complete all fields necessary for a credit card transaction -- this will make it easy for me to refund or credit your account after the early registration ends. Early registration credits are made automatically based on your registration modification date and the refund policy at that time. The 2009 registration period begins in about 45 days, and after that there will only be eight months before the conference. Our goal is to make everyone aware of the conference and registration process so there are no late registration fees. So, spread the word and register early to get your early registration discount!  Please check our website at www.3dsug.org for additional information, and after you register, please keep your confirmation code in case you need to make any changes to your event schedule.

Combined Sponsorship and Attendee Registration
I am currently looking at simplifying the registration process to a top-down registration system. This will allow a person to handle all their registration needs from sponsorship to conference attendance to special events registration in one place. Last year many of you had to register separately for each of the event categories. If all goes as planned, this process will be combined.

Guest Registration
The guest registration is for our Tuesday evening awards banquet. Registered conference attendees are automatically included in this event and need not to register separately. This extra registration option is available for those attendees who want to bring a guest to the banquet and for vendors or authorized individuals who do not attend the conference but want to attend the banquet. This has been the policy from the beginning of the group's existence and today still causes confusion and registration errors. My goal is to make everyone aware of this before the registration process opens. It just helps us plan accordingly for the awards banquet. Obviously a major problem with an incorrect head count is that the group has to pay for "no shows" and it also prevents others from attending. So please help us out by registering early and keeping your guest registration information current the closer we get to the event.

Refund Policy
In the past, the group would refund individuals for guest registration errors. We are no longer able to do so, as I have given too many refunds and still paid for these individual own errors in the past. Effective immediately, all registration less than 30 days out (including the guest registration) will be non refundable. So please, read the registration form closely and inform your admins to help prevent unnecessary charges. And, if your company's admin or secretary handles your registration, please make sure everyon'es email addresses are submitted with the online form. Please note the CC email address field and use it when required. That way both parties will receive confirmation information and credit card receipts upon completing the registration process. The system is designed for complete automation, so again, follow the instructions closely -- it will eliminate unnecessary phone calls requesting additional documentation.

As we go forth, I will keep you updated.  Let's start planning for Daytona Beach and help your Executive Board with suggestions and ideas for the conference to be successful.

Enter to Win Contest
In order to increase 3DSUG membership and attendance at the 2009 3DSUG annual users group conference, we're asking everyone to invite two new users to get involved with our organization. Increasing the number of attendees will help support our valued sponsors and attract new vendors to ensure the continued success of the 3DSUG organization.
  • Do you know someone who would benefit by joining the 3DSUG? If so, please make an introduction!
  • Do you use a supplier who hasn't participated in the 3DSUG vendor fair in the past two years? If so, please make an introduction!
ENTER TO WINContest Rules
Remember, invitees must be users of 3D Systems, Inc. equipment who have not participated in the past two years. The first two 3DSUG members or vendors who invite two new users to join will be eligible to win a 3DSUG stadium blanket and other prizes.
